Neudorf

Winemaker: Tim Finn, John Kavanagh

"Neudorf is New Zealand's Best Small Wine Producer"
"Wines for the Thinking Drinker"
Bob Campbell MW

“Back in the 70s, when we planted our vineyard, growing grapes was regarded as dodgy - the Rural Bank told us to think about sheep - there would be no future in wine. But we wanted to make beautiful wine and we still do. I can honestly say there has never been a day in the past 25 years when we thought we had it all sorted.” (Owners Tim & Judy Finn) However today Neudorf is regarded as one of New Zealands finest boutique wineries and exports to 16 countries and have their wine listed at some the world’s greatest restaurants.

Neudorf Vineyards' home plantings spill down a gentle north-facing slope overlooking a side branch of the Moutere Valley at the top of New Zealand's South Island. The Finns also grow grapes on the stony alluvial area between the Waimea and Wai-iti rivers at Brightwater, on the Waimea plains south of Nelson.

Vineyard management is driven by the winemaker's desire for ripe flavours and concentrated fruit. A combination of high plant density (up to 5000 vines/hectare) and low production (down to one kilo per vine for Pinot Noir) helps achieve the quality of fruit to create long-lived, intense but elegant wines. New clonal material is consistently being evaluated.

Brightwater Riesling

Neudorf Brightwater Riesling
Region: Brightwater, New Zealand

Single Vineyard Wine. Delicious and delicate - a gentle puff of talcum powder with a hint
of limes washing over a bed of riverstones. Riesling always has the purity and elegance to
entrance and refresh. Look for a little fruit sweetness in the front palate followed by some spicy notes (Easter buns and cinnamon) finishing with fresh tropical fruit.

Sauvignon Blanc

Neudorf Sauvignon Blanc
Region: Nelson, New Zealand

A nose of soft citrus, elderflower, white currants, lemongrass and a hint of nettle and dewy forest leaves. A creamy Sauvignon Blanc, deeply elegant and satisfying from the ripe entry through to the final flourish of minerality. Aromatic with a nice fruit burst in the mid-palate to carry the wine through. In the vineyards and winery we are constantly pushing Sauvignon Blanc into shape to define it as a fine wine, rather than a refreshing beverage. We want a wine with texture. A wine which is complex and satisfying rather than a simple expression of fruit.

‘Maggie’s Farm’ Pinot Gris

Neudorf ‘Maggies Farm’ Pinot Gris
Region: Brightwater, New Zealand

Fine fleshy Pinot Gris with excellent acid structure keeping the wine in check. Quince notes aided and abetted by Kaffir lime, lemongrass, nashi and warm Sturmer apple pie. The well fruited palate shows excellent creamy texture with a touch of nashi-like graininess. Minerality threads through the wine pulling the fruit into a gracefully attenuated package, finishing
with a charming puff of perfumed talc. This Pinot Gris has an elegance not always achieved in New World examples of the variety, where fleshy can often become flabby.

Nelson Chardonnay

Region: Nelson, New Zealand

Minerality: That delicious, refreshing quality which defies total explanation. A sense of stony soils, an aura of a briskly flowing river in an isolated forest clearing. A quiet sense of place and past.

The minerality in this Chardonnay weaves and entwines around sweet nectarine fruits, perhaps tangelo skins. The shape is that of a tear drop - round and full up front passing through a lovely textured mid palate to a zingy attenuated finish

‘Tom’s Block’ Pinot Noir

Neudorf ‘Tom’s Block’ Pinot Noir
Region: Nelson, New Zealand

Enticing pinot colour, clarity and hue. Deep complex earthy nose with a lick of leather around wild berry, forest floor notes. Search for touches of liquorice, coffee, cream, cherries and plums. With a broad palate the wine sweeps around the mouth leaving a long lingering after taste. This is a serious, sumptuous wine with a slinky component and linen textured phenolics. Oak handling is subtle and tannins are fine and rich and spread through the wine.

Moutere Pinot Gris

Neudorf Moutere Pinot Gris
Region: Moutere Hills, New Zealand

Single vineyard - wild yeast ferment Honeycomb, spicy pears and apples and baked quince
pie. This gorgeous Pinot Gris is a country larder of aromas.

A fine phenolic structure and lively acidity pull this wine together, avoiding the sometimes flabby constitution which can afflict so many new world Gris. A textural wine at the start of its evolution. It isn't noticeably sweet but is a serious, rich wine already exhibiting lovely
balance.

Moutere Chardonnay

Neudorf Moutere Chardonnay
Region: Moutere Hills, New Zealand

Light gold with nuance of green. An integrated nose pinned with mineral "wet slate" notes alongside crème caramel, grapefruit, melon and an appealing sur-lees character.

A silken mouthfeel coats the richly fruited palate with an imbedded thread of linen-like phenolics drawing the whole package into focus. A complex, serious, cool climate Chardonnay, already looking classy in its youth.

Moutere Pinot Noir

Neudorf Moutere Pinot Noir
Region: Moutere Hills, New Zealand

Youthful, purple hue in the glass with a complex nose of cracked pepper, dark summer berries, black cherry and chocolate, combined with visceral, earthy characters, dried wild herbs and excellent but unobtrusive supporting oak.

Initial savoury / black fruit entry carries through a mouth filling, richly structured palate, the texture of soft leather. An underlying mineral acidity supports this richness, adding a certain juiciness and considerable length. Overall a wine of complexity and finesse.

Moutere Home Vineyard Pinot Noir

Neudorf Home Vineyard Pinot Noir
Region: Nelson, New Zealand

Single vineyard wine, wild yeast ferment. Each year we craft this wine around a our "Pommard" clone Pinot Noir vines which spill down the slope to the front and alongside our homestead at Neudorf. These vines consistently produce a wine which we cherish for its elegant structure of fine silky tannins and its balance of power, layered complexity
and translucent finesse.

Subtle and ethereal with the classic Neudorf Pinot visceral notes wrapped around lovely ripe brambly fruits. The nose is entrancing, running from the fragrance of violets and dark cherries through a summer roadside of blackberries, brambles and general "sur bois" with a background of mushrooms, dried herbs and cedary spice.

The initial impact is one of smoothness and femininity, silk swirling and flashing as the wine reveals the layers of its being. But the underlying strength and muscle of the wine soon becomes apparent.
