Bass Fine Wines

Region: Rosevears, Tasmania

Winemaker: Guy Wagner

Originally set up by owner Guy Wagner as a classic negociant operation, working backwards from the marketplace purchasing from various vineyards in bottle and in barrel, the focus of Bass Fine Wines has now moved towards the production of world-class wines using grapes picked from specially chosen sites in and around Northern Tasmania. The recently developed winery (2006) has been set up as a Pinot Noir, Riesling and Chardonnay specialist with Bass Fine Wines picking up awards such as “Best Value” Wine for the Bass Strait Pinot Noir at the 2007 Tasmanian Wine show and a rating of 93 for the current release Bass Strait Riesling by James Halliday in the latest 2009 Australian Wine Companion. This is definitely a winery to watch.

Strait Riesling

Bass Strait Riesling
Region: Rosevears, Tasmania
Dry growing conditions were preceded by a frosty spring, resulting in reduced yields of fruit. The vineyards producing the fruit for this wine were selected for purity of fruit and ripeness characteristics.

This Riesling has fragrant spicy and stonefruit aromas with some yeast derivatives. The palate is full flavoured, and weighted without sweetness, and has a clean acid drive.

The fruit for this wine was grown at several Northern Tasmanian vineyards, selected for their quality profiles. Fruit was hand harvested prior to whole bunch pressing.

The wine has complex, restrained aromas of stonefruit, spicy French oak, citrus, and funk from the solids. The palate is delicate and complex with both savoury and fruit flavours, underpinned by acidity.
