Kara Tara
Western Cape, STH AFRICA
Kara-Tara is a joint venture between Rudger van Wyk (Diners Club Young Winemaker of the Year 2018) and José Condé (owner of Stark-Conde Wines). The name Kara-Tara refers to a small town outside Knysna where Rudger lived. Translated from the Khoisan language, it means “deep dark shadows” and refers to the Karatara river that runs through the town. Having worked at Kanonkop and Nitida wineries, Rudger was granted an opportunity to work vintage in Burgundy, which was a game changer for the young man, and the inspiration for the outstanding Chardonnay and Pinot Noirs that Kara-Tara has produced from the cool-climate vineyards in the Western Cape. As claimed by one of world’s most influential wine critic, Jancis Robinson, “Rudger Van Wyk is going from strength to strength. His wines are definitely worth looking out for.”
